Dr. Ivan Cheng Quote:

“I care deeply about every one of my patients, and I know that it is a privilege to care for you.  I want to ensure that all my patients receive the highest level of customized care to maximize their outcomes in the least invasive way possible.”

Ivan Cheng, M.D. is an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at the Texas Back Institute, practicing in Frisco and Plano, Texas. Dr. Cheng earned his Bachelor of Arts in Neurobiology from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with Highest Distinction in General Scholarship and Phi Beta Kappa honors. He went on to obtain his Doctorate of Medicine from Harvard Medical School, where he graduated cum laude. Dr. Cheng completed his internship in General Surgery and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at U.C. Davis Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Spine Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis.

With an extensive career in both academic medicine and a clinical practice, Dr. Cheng has held numerous leadership positions, including Chief of Spine Trauma and Spine Research at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he served as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Neurosurgery. He has also served as a Residency Program Director and has been actively involved in medical education and research.

Dr. Cheng specializes in scoliosis, complex spinal deformities, minimally invasive spine surgery, and complex revisions. He has contributed significantly to the field through his research, peer-reviewed publications, and book chapters. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the ISSLS Prize in Clinical Research, NASS Outstanding Paper Award, and Best Basic Science Awards from international spine societies. He is an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the North American Spine Society (NASS), American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS), and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS).

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Cheng is dedicated to mentorship, education, and advancing spine care. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family, playing video games with his kids, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, and exploring new culinary experiences with his wife, Kristen.
