Chief Executive Officer Texas Back Institute

Trish Bowling has served as Chief Financial Officer for the Texas Back Institute since June 2005, was appointed Chief Operating Officer (October 2008) and most recently appointed to Chief Executive Officer (January 2010). She came to Texas Back Institute with 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Trish graduated from Texas A&M University in 1985 and became a certified public accountant in 1987. Bowling started her career in the healthcare audit department of Ernst and Young LLP in 1985. She worked in Ernst and Young offices across Texas and California for over 12 years. Bowling’s work included auditing all types of healthcare organizations including large and small for-profit and not-for-profit hospital systems, physician practices of all sizes and companies serving the healthcare industry in both the private and public sectors. After leaving Ernst and Young in 1997, she spent over eight years working with a venture-capital-backed company providing management and leasing services to cardiology practices in Florida and Louisiana. Since joining Texas Back Institute in 2005, Bowling’s role has expanded to include oversight of the Texas Back Institute clinic operations.

CEO Emeritus & Chief Strategy Officer Texas Back Institute

Mike Franz joined Texas Back Institute as Chief Executive Officer in October of 2007 and brings a wealth of management experience to his position, having built and led successful teams for large corporations as well as start-up enterprises. Franz founded Murata Business Systems in 1982 and took the company from the 16th-ranked fax company in the United States to number one in only four years. After leaving Murata, he joined Sprint, where he created the wholesale business unit, growing it to $1.2 billion in 24 months. Franz then held a unique role as both President of Sprint Wholesale and Chief of Staff, Long Distance Division. During his final tenure with Sprint, he served as President of Sprint Business, where he was responsible for a $6 billion, 8,000-person organization that provided voice and data communication products and services to all of Sprint’s business and government customers. After leaving Sprint, Franz served as Chairman and CEO to several companies in the Internet and software industries and was also a partner in a successful merchant banking effort in China. He received his BA and MBA from Santa Clara University in California.

Chief Operating Officer Texas Back Institute

Deb Lief joined Texas Back Institute in 2014 as Regional Director of Operations. October of 2016 she was appointed Chief Operating Officer. Deb came to TBI with over 40 years of healthcare experience. Deb began her career in healthcare as a Registered Nurse working in surgical intensive care units and was the youngest RN ever promoted to a Head Nurse position at Tulsa Regional Hospital. Throughout her 8 years at bedside, Deb soon determined she had a ‘head for business’.   The next 16 years of her career were spent in the home health industry with Home Health Home Care, Inc. HHHC grew to be the largest home health agency in the mid-west, with offices in 7 states and over 5000 employees. She began with HHHC as a local manager and rose to an Executive Vice President position. Deb then moved on to more entrepreneurial endeavors. As part owner she oversaw the operations for several successful Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facilities. Upon the sale of these facilities, in 2007, she became the Chief Operating Officer for a local sleep company. She and her team successfully grew the company from one laboratory to 3 free standing laboratories, and then successfully partnered with area hospitals to open and manage another 4 laboratories. Deb grew up Denver Colorado, attended college at University of Colorado and Montana State University, is married, an endurance bicyclist, and is GiGi to a beautiful granddaughter and identical twin grandsons.

Chief Financial Officer Texas Back Institute

Lise McConnell joined Texas Back Institute in February 2006 as Director of Financial Reporting and later Director of Finance. In 2016, she was appointed Chief Financial Officer. Lise graduated with a BBA in Finance from Sam Houston State University and began her career with a large institutional investor in commercial real estate. Following a career in commercial real estate and taking time off to be with her 3 children, she returned to the workforce and spent 10 years with a local public accounting firm specializing in back house accounting for the medical, dental and veterinary professions. Her favorite things about TBI are seeing first-hand the impact our physician’s dedication and experience can have on a patient’s quality of life and the culture of “service” to provide an excellent patient experience. Away from TBI, Lise enjoys beach vacations, knitting, baking and spoiling her granddaughter.

Cheryl Zapata
Chief Development Officer Texas Back Institute

Cheryl Zapata had been working with Texas Back Institute for 17 years as a consultant and in 2008 came on as Director of Communications. Zapata was appointed Chief Development Officer in January 2010.  She comes to the Texas Back Institute with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in many aspects of business.  Zapata began her career working as a legal assistant in a law firm, in which worked for several medical providers.  She has founded many businesses over the years, including The AMRAS Corporation, which serves as medical records custodian for hundreds of clinics and hospitals.  Zapata has trained hundreds of attorneys and medical practices on the HIPAA laws, including Privacy and Security, sales and marketing of a medical practice and other medical management topics. Her role has expanded tremendously since 2008 and she now oversees all Texas Back Institute’s marketing, IT, EMR and business development. In Zapata’s personal life she has multiple businesses in and out of the medical field, enjoys giving back through various ministries and mentoring, has fun with crafting and, most of all, loves to spend quality time with her family.
